Nurture and Empower Women in Philanthropy
GIVING WoMN is a member-driven, pooled fund, grant-making organization. Our primary goals are to educate women about philanthropy, and through collective giving make impact grants in our community to address pressing, unmet needs. GIVING WoMN makes grants in the areas of education, health and human services.
The purpose of GIVING WoMN is to nurture women’s leadership in philanthropy by engaging and educating our members, increasing charitable contributions and strengthening our community through the impact of collective giving.
Our organization was founded as Women of Courage in February of 2005. A small group of women started discussions in late 2004, envisioning the potential power of in philanthropy and pooled giving, and how it could make a difference in the greater metropolitan area of Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota. That small group of women has grown to over 100 members. In April of 2009, membership voted to change the organization’s name to GIVING WoMN. Collectively, to date, we have donated over $963,000, and have touched the lives of countless people in our community. We are “marching” to reach $1 million dollars in cumulative grants this year and are planning to celebrate this achievement with additional grants to be granted this May at our annual meeting and celebration of 10 years since we started our organization.
Since our inception in 2005 until March 2014, Courage Center served as the fiscal agent for our organization. In 2013 Courage Center merged with the Sister Kenny Institute under the Allina umbrella of organizations. We are very thankful to Courage Kenny who helped us get started and supported us ever since. They were asked by Allina to terminate our relationship after the merger between Courage Center and the Sister Kenny Institute.
A GIVING WoMN subcommittee investigated other fiscal agent options and also whether we should establish our own independent 501(c)(3) entity. After investigation and presentation to membership. We determined and our membership ratified that the most economical and best all around solution is for us to operate under the Minnesota Community Foundation as a Charitable Community Fund. Starting March 2014, we operate under the 501(c)(3) entity of the Minnesota Community Foundation and 100% of our grants will go to organizations nominated by GIVING WoMN members.
GIVING WoMN is committed to making our mission a reality in the lives of our members and the community. We are continually growing in membership, programming and the impact that we make in the community.
